The Exterior. That dreaded area that you put off caring for day after day, week after week until months have gone by and the peeling paint can no longer be ignored. The Exterior.
Exterior care doesn’t have to be such a dreaded chore. It can be exciting and challenging once you get past the initial decisions. What is your exterior now? Wooden shingles? Clapboard? Vinyl siding?
Wooden shingles can be painted, stained or allowed to weather for natural coloring. The end result is always based on your preparation. The right wooden shingles will weather naturally, enhancing the warmth of any home. Improperly prepared wooden shingles however, will only end up as curling tragedies!
Clapboard shingles are my favorite. Used long before Pilgrims settled in the Americas, clapboard shingles offer a sleek, smooth look to any home exterior. The height of any clapboard shingle is a personal preference and that is often determined as the distance from one shingle to the next one placed on and above it. Clapboards are wood and must be prepared for endurance similar to the wooden shingle. Clapboards are also good for natural weathering colors, stains and painting.
Last but certainly not least is vinyl siding. Today’s vinyl siding comes a variety of colors and recently have been producing siding that looks and feels like a wooden exterior shingle! The only difference between siding and any wooden exterior is that siding needs no maintenance beyond a good power washing once every few years or so. Vinyl is final!
